Patricia Steur
"People are my passion and black and white photography will always remain a very important facet of my work."
Patricia Steur began her career in 1980, working with magazines, photographing celebrities and shooting CD covers. Some well-known artists that she has photographed are Stevie Ray Vaughn, Andy Warhol and Bono.
Steur’s photographic publications are “The Rock Star Tattoo Encyclopedia" (1982), "De Laatste Ridders" (1990), a book of portraits of decorated WWII heroes which was made into a documentary, "Het leven is de Speelbal van de Tijd" (1999), a book of black and white portraits of famous artists, and "Made in Holland" (2004), about successful immigrants in Holland.
One of the most important aspects of Steur’s work is her interest in tattoos and rock and roll. Her main passion, however, is photographing tattoos and their vital role in indigenous culture. Recently, she was invited to travel to New Zealand to learn about the culture of the indigenous people with the help of well known Maori tattoo artist Gordon Toi Hatfield. There she was able to explore her fascination with tattoos and the importance of tattoos in Maori culture. The collaboration between Hatfield and Steur resulted in five successful exhibitions in the Netherlands and the publication of the photographs in the book “Dedicated by Blood." In November 2002, the book was launched in the Scheepvaart (Maritime) Museum in Amsterdam along with an exhibition. More than twenty-five thousand people visited this show.
Since 1987, Steur has had 28 exhibitions in Holland and abroad. Her most recent publications are "Dutch Beauty", a book and exhibition about powerful women from all walks of life who made a difference for the Netherlands and "Willy de Ville," a book about the rock and roll legend with photographs dated back as early as 1981.
